Production Leathersmith / Leathersmith Apprentice

Position Overview:

We are seeking talented individuals to join our team as:

  • Production Leathersmith
    • 4+ years of experience working in a production leather goods workshop, dry goods or textile production, or similar environment
    • Experience cutting, assembling and sewing leather good or similar products
  • Leathersmith Apprentice
    • No previous experience is required, but it is preferred
    • Experience doing various leathercraft tasks like cutting, stitching (by hand or machine), edge burnishing, etc. using vegetable tanned leathers

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accurately cut leather parts using clicker dies and hand tools.
  • Assemble products utilizing various fastening techniques and decorative elements.
  • Assist with general shop duties and machine maintenance.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure efficient workflow and product quality.
  • Use a handheld device (iPad) to manage orders and post work updates effectively, create notifications for supply restocks.

Additional Responsibilities for the Leathersmith Apprentice:

  • Maintain inventory of leather hides and ensure organized storage - Apprentice Role
  • Perform occasional deliveries and supply pickups in the DFW metroplex. - Apprentice Role
  • Occasional repairs and leather cleaning for walk-in customers.

Additional Responsibilities for the Production Leathersmith:

  • Lead production efforts to produce production orders of wallets, bells, bags, totes and cases
  • Pattern-making for wallets and bags
  • Advise on workflows and processes to ensure efficient production of current and future designs
  • Use a variety of industrial sewing machines to stitch parts of, or complete bags, wallets, and belts
  • Adhoc pattern and design adjustments to meet the needs of custom orders
  • Occasionally communicate with walk-in customers to advise on custom and/or made-to-order projects

Opportunities for Growth:

  • Develop expertise in production-level leather crafting.
  • Gain proficiency in operating industrial sewing machines and specialized equipment.
  • Advance within the production team and Odin Leather Goods to and take on additional roles and responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Apprentice

  • No prior experience is required;
  • willingness to learn and train on the job.

Production Leathersmith

  • Prior experience required in a related skill set

All positions

  • Minimum age requirement of 18.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Interest in craftsmanship or related fields.
  • Proficiency in basic hand tools and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to perform tasks accurately and efficiently.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, and move for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity and hand strength.
  • Great hand-eye coordination
  • Capability to lift and carry objects up to 60 pounds.
  • Comfortable working with various materials and chemicals.

Ideal Qualifications

  • Previous leather working experience.
  • Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions
  • Comfort performing repetitive tasks with high accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to interpret drawings and sketches.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment
  • Flexibility to work on a variety of products and designs.

Work Environment:

  • Fast-paced manufacturing environment with set production targets.
  • 30-40 hours per week, Monday-Friday schedule with occasional (optional) offsite events.
