Use the template with a pencil, pen, scratch awl, or other marking tool to transfer the design onto your leather. The durable acrylic edge may also be carefully used alongside sharp leather knives, rotary cutters, and other leatherworking tools.

Two-Piece Template Design

To keep the package manageable and reduce shipping costs, the full-length template is divided into two acrylic sections.

Engraved alignment marks help the two pieces fit together accurately so the complete strap shape can be transferred to the leather.

A guitar strap can be made from many different leather tannages, weights, and combinations. Your material choices will influence how the finished strap feels and performs.

A firmer leather can create a more structured strap, while a softer leather may feel more flexible and broken-in from the beginning.

Consider whether you want the finished strap to be:

• Firm and supportive
• Soft and flexible
• Lightweight or substantial
• Smooth enough to slide over clothing
• Grippy enough to help hold the instrument in position
• Unlined or lined for additional comfort and structure

Vegetable-tanned leather is a strong choice for tooling, carving, stamping, dyeing, and burnished edges. Bridle, harness, chrome-tanned, and other leathers may also work well depending on the desired look and feel.

Optional Lining

The strap may be made as a single layer or paired with a lining.

Possible lining materials include:

• Suede for additional grip
• Calfskin for a smooth, refined finish
• Soft chrome-tanned leather for comfort
• A contrasting leather for added structure and visual interest

When lining the strap, account for the combined thickness of both layers, especially near folded areas, adjustment points, strap buttons, and hardware connections.

Depending on the selected materials, the layers may be glued and stitched together for additional strength and a more finished appearance.

The color does not affect the template’s dimensions, durability, markings, or functionality.
